Outstanding Animal Advocates...
In Defense of Animals. This is truly a ground-breaking organization. Under the leadership of Elliot Katz, D.V.M., I.D.A. launched the "guardianship" campaign, to foster changing our language about the animals in our lives to reflect our roles as guardians, not owners. If as a society we recognize that "They are not our property,...we are not their owners," we can hope to change the consciousness that accepts abuse and exploitation of animals everywhere. In Defense of Animals also oversees a broad range of issues that affect animals, including laboratory experimentation, puppy mills, wildlife sanctuary, farm animal rescue, and more.
San Francisco S.P.C.A. Under the leadership of former president Ed Sayres, the S.F.S.P.C.A. helped to make San Francisco the first major city to be a "no-kill" city for animals. Now they're helping to rewrite the rules on animal care, control and shelter in cities all over the world. They also offer a variety of programs to support caregivers everywhere, including assistance in finding pet-friendly rental property, compassionate teaching guidelines, information on establishing no-kill policies and innovative spay/neuter programs in your community, and more.
Great Dane Rescue of Northern California. One of hundreds of breed rescue organizations, Great Dane Rescue provides sanctuary for "dangels" of all ages and circumstances. Organizations like this offer an opportunity to enjoy the company of a favorite breed without contributing to the overpopulation of animals in our shelters. At the same time it's a wonderful chance enjoy the rewards of rescuing a sensitive animal from the frightening and potentially dangerous experience of abandonment or abuse.
